Brechtsong 06:25
(This is the words from memory - and my translation - apologies for inaccuracies. It is a wonderful poem) An jenem Tag, in blauen Mond September/ on that day, in the new moon of September Still unter einem jungen Pflaumenbaum/ quietly, under a plum tree Da hielt ich sie, die stille bleiche liebe/ I held her, the quiet pale beloved In meinem arm vie einen holden Traum/ in my arms like a brave dream Und uber uns im schonen Sommerhimmel/ and over us in the beautiful summer sky War eine Wolke die ich lange sah/ was a cloud I watched for a long time Sie war sehr Weiss und ungeheuer oben/ it was very white and absolutely huge Und als ich aufsah war sie nimmer da/ and when I looked up it was gone Seit jenem Tag sind viele viele Monde/ since that day, many many moons Geschwommen still hinunter und vorbie/ have swum under and past us Die Pflaumen baume sind wohl abgehauen/ the plum trees are probably cut down now Und fragst du mich was mit der liebe sei/ and you say to me how is my love life so sag ich dir, ich kann mich nicht errinern/ I say to you I can't really remember Und doch gewiss, Ich Weiss schon was du meinst/ and yet I do know what you mean Doch ihr gesich dass Weiss ich wirklich nimmer/ but her face - I really wouldn't know it. Ich Weiss nur mehr ich kusste es dereinst/ all I know is, I kissed it then Und auch den Kuss, ihn hatt' ich langst vergessen/and I would have forgotten the kiss as well Wenn nicht die wolke da gewesen war/ if the cloud hadn't been there Die Weiss ich noch und werd ich immer wissen/ that I would still recongise and will never forget. Sie war sehr weiss und kam von oben her/ it was very white and came out of the heavens. Die Pflaumenbaume sind wohl abgehauen/perhaps the plum trees still bloom Und jede Frau hat jetzt veilleicht dass siebte Kind/ perhaps that woman now has her seventh child. Doch jede Wolke bluhte nur Minuten/ It 's true: each cloud flowers only for a moment. Und als ich aufsah schwand sie schon im Wind/ when I looked up it was gone..

Ego contemptus mundi sum candor vitae/ I, disdain for the world, am the light of life O misera peregrinatio in multis laboribus te demitto/ I reject wondering about in the multiplicity of unhappy earthly occupations and works O virtute, venite ad me et ascendamus ad fontem vitae/ O virtues come to me, together let us ascend to the font of life.

Grateful 04:24
I couldn't be more grateful than I am And I am, and I am. O I am. I couldn't see my wonder than I do And I do, and I do. O I do. Love came round again, after the death and the pain. Love came round again. I'll see you there, away from the edge, in the arms of the circle 'Cause love has made us friends. You couldn't go down deeper than you do. And you do, and you do. O you do. Love came round again, after the death and the pain. Love came round again. I'll see you there, away from the edge, in the arms of the circle 'Cause love has made us friends. I couldn't be more grateful than I am. And I am, and I am. O I am. I couldn't see my wonder than I do And I do, and I do. O I do.

Check out the road ahead, check your windscreen's clear. Pull out the map, let's drive Until the fork in the road appears, until that fork appears. Head for the mountain range and wind your windows down To let the snow pour in. Until the fire in the heart is found, until that fire is found. He'll take you wounded, he'll take you broken . He'll take you higher than you've ever been. Are you worried that you may be guilty, Aha, release, let it into the stream. Pick up your passengers, you needn't travel alone. And just take one last look. Now go, hit the road There it is leading home. Look sharp, look deep, look long Now go , hit the road There it is, leading home. Look sharp, look deep, look long. He'll take you wounded, he'll take you broken . He'll take you higher than you've ever been. Are you worried that you may be guilty, Aha, release, let it into the stream. It's happening now. Amen, amen.

From China 03:45
Darling you are flawless and blonde And every time I touch you, you sing a grateful song. And every curve is perfect, and every shine is real. Underneath my fingers I feel the way you feel. Every time I play I hear you say Hold me, love me, don't go away. Did somebody fly you or float you on the sea? How many hands worked through you before you came to me? Cause you were made in China like the new world will be Fallen from the future, into my arms here with me. Every time I play , I pray. From China, for money, I bought love all the way, for money I bought love all the way For money I bought love, all the way.

I've been thinking hard to get the measure of you But thinking won't pull back the pleasure of you. You turned up on the street like something shiny, darling. Always finding treasure on the road. Lying on my bed I cannot see the ceiling 'Cause you have covered us in clouds of bitter healing. Fit to fill my lungs, your scorpionn death - that stung me. Always finding treasure on the road Lies. You told them by the million And I, I turned out to be So desperate to believe That things were better than they seemed That I believed. I could have loved you more if you had stayed for longer But you had different plans and voices that were stronger. The letters that I wrote, I know they will not reach you. Always finding treasure on the road Lies. You told them by the million And I, I turned out to be So desperate to believe That things were better than they seemed That I believed.

Quicksong 02:58
Who rules you? Who has the key? A thousand miles to look inside another rulebook; worth it. Here and now, is what you have. And only love and only peace and only honour can save us now. But you already know all of this is true. The question really is, what are you going to do? And you already feel the clothes are wearing thin And as the holes appear, something new begins. Get out of the box and get up on the floor, you're needed. Breathe and serve and breathe and serve. You think you're not enough, or maybe you're too much But you're a perfect fit - so kick it into touch! Your life has called you in because it wants you here. It was a summoning - very very clear. Get out of the box and get up on the floor, you're needed. Watch and learn. Burn from the heart. We were meant to live in love and love our living, So let's start.

Souls 04:17
Another year on this earth. thank you, thank you, thank you. One year closer to my birth - thank you, thank you, thank you. Here we are revolving, but where are we? And others keep arriving - Who is she? Times are changing fast, they sometimes do. More hands keep arriving - Who are you? Questions pour down from the sky. Do they? Do they? Do they? Find a home in you and I. Deeper, deeper. Here we are revolving, but where are we? And others keep arriving - Who is he? Times are changing fast, they sometimes do. More hands keep arriving - Who are you? More hands keep arriving, who are you? More hands keep arriving, arriving and arriving. More hands keep arriving, arriving and arriving. Filling up the room with souls We're filling up the room with souls etc.

Ah, the one that pulls the strings, I don't know what pleases Him. I don't know where He has gone. He don't show, long time. Long time. He just left a hole. Hey, it's not OK by me. Disappear and I can't see the Omega alpha one done gone, long time. He just went away. (I did the same, but it wasn't the same) And I looked for you in the dark. (Kept on looking) Yeah, I looked for you in the dark (Kept on looking) And I looked for you in the light Found you just where I left you, just where I left you etc.

about

Derek Jarman once said that to get projects completed artists shouldn't be perfectionist - I could probably do with being a bit more perfectionist. There are ropey bits in this (flaws in my playing and singing), but also passages I'm really pleased with. It stands as some witness to half a lifetime writing songs, as does the other collection Treasure on the Road. It's good in a car on a long drive.

Joni said songs were like tattoos. I'm thinking, as I compile this bandcamp thing, that songs are like tags, ready to decompress and open up little worlds.

The photo is ice - taken by talented photographer, abolitionist vegan and new media artist Jenny Trigg. And on the little photo of me playing, behind me one of Jenny's beautiful films playing - that was at 'Embryo' at the King's Arms, Salford.
