about

I went into Johnny Roadhouse one Sunny Saturday, a bit high, and fell in love with a guitar. I went back three times that day and then bought it even though it took about a year to make good that debt. It is a beautiful replica jazz guitar - it came with moustaches (like me) - extra bits of wood to stick on the bridge, but I didn't stick them on. I wrote this love song to it - it sounds so pure and clear.

The Chinese speech is my friend artist Mei Yuk Wong who was kind enough to speak back to me as the guitar - I'm not quite sure what it says, but I think something like 'thank you for playing me'.

Unfortunately I find it a bit difficult to play that guitar now because it's got very wide hips. Reaching over can give me shoulder trouble, so I've mostly gone back to the original classical guitar that my Dad paid for for me - bought from Boosey and Hawkes the music shop in Penzance. I was transfixed by it. The case smelt smelly - of the size in the glue. And the back of it was lustrous amber woodgrain. I used to just sit and stare at it. So this is for my old flame too - the old guitar, finally back in my arms again, chipped and - one of the winders is even broken off at the end somehow, but I love it, it is so easy and comfortable and a bit more wideness on the fretboard makes some of the fingerstyle easier.

lyrics

Darling you are flawless and blonde
And every time I touch you, you sing a grateful song.
And every curve is perfect, and every shine is real.
Underneath my fingers I feel the way you feel.

Every time I play I hear you say
Hold me, love me, don't go away.

Did somebody fly you or float you on the sea?
How many hands worked through you before you came to me?
Cause you were made in China like the new world will be
Fallen from the future, into my arms here with me.

Every time I play , I pray.

From China, for money, I bought love
all the way, for money I bought love all the way
For money I bought love, all the way.
